CubeSat Commander.

This is the big one, Commander. You'll learn how tiny satellites actually move through space, how engineers squeeze the most science out of every gram and watt, the real communications problem CubeSat33 was built to solve, and how a mission travels all the way from a sketch to a working spacecraft in orbit.

Lesson 1

Moving in space

Many CubeSats now carry electric (ion) thrusters. Instead of a big fiery burn, they push out a thin stream of electrically charged particles. The thrust is tiny — a fraction of the force it takes to lift a paperclip — but it is incredibly efficient. We measure that efficiency with specific impulse (Isp): electric thrusters reach 2,000–6,000 seconds, far better than chemical rockets. Fire them patiently and they slowly build up delta-v — the total change in speed a spacecraft can make.

Lesson 2

Payload efficiency

A CubeSat is a juggling act of three budgets at once: mass, power, and volume. Every gram of structure or fuel is a gram you can't spend on the instrument. Good engineering means getting the most useful science per kilogram, per watt, and per dollar — that ratio, not raw size, is the real measure of a great design.

Lesson 3

The communications challenge

Remember the blackout? The old fix is store-and-forward: the satellite saves data on board and dumps it later when it flies over a ground station — but that can mean waiting up to 100–150 minutes. Newer ideas shrink the gap: inter-satellite laser links pass data from one satellite to the next, and relay concepts — the heart of the CubeSat33 mission — propose routing data through a Starlink-class satellite network (with the operator's cooperation) to get it home in near-real time.

Lesson 4

From idea to orbit

Real missions follow a path: design the spacecraft, build it from tested parts, test it hard (shaking it on a vibration table and baking/freezing it in a thermal-vacuum chamber to survive launch and space), then launch on a rideshare, and finally operate it from a ground station. Skip a step and the mission fails — which is why testing matters as much as building.
